The Beginning of the North Dumfries Historical Preservation Society

Welcome to the new blog for the North Dumfries Historical Preservation Society (N.D.H.P.S.)! The society has been established in hopes to preserve and protect the historical records typical of North Dumfries Township (that is, archival records that are in or related to the Township).

The idea of the Society began about 10 years ago, however, the Committee unfortunately came to a stop. It was not until the beginning of January 2013 that we began again. There were two main reasons for the Society to begin:

1) We were approached by various members in the community about historical records that were being kept in their basement and attics. Others had items that they were going to throw away if they could not find an establishment to give it to. We knew that something had to be done as records were and are deteriorating and others were/are being thrown away.

2) The state of the Municipal records, especially the oldest records, are currently poor. Lack of conservation including moisture damage has left several of the municipal documents in poor condition.

We have since visits local archives such as the City of Cambridge Archives and the Waterloo Region Archives to learn more about how the archive was established and their capital and operational costs.

The Society is comprised of two co-chairs and approximately 8 other members. The Society meets once a month.

We look forward to working with the community and hope that together, we can make a difference in the preservation of our historical records!
